I use Thunderbird at home and in the office and one thing which annoys me, is that, by default Thunderbird just checks the INBOX of an IMAP account for new mail. To check each folder of an IMAP account for new mail, simply change

mail.check_all_imap_folders_for_new

from false to true in the config editor.
